3 Things in Life to Balance

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American poet and essayist said that the years in our life are less important than the life in our years. Actually he talked about how we should live meaningfully and encouraged us to have a quality life. I personally felt that it is true because life is not a bed of roses but full of surprises. However, we will always treasure the moments that we enjoyed and meaningful to us. This article will talk about how we can balance our life in meaningful way.

Generally, we all have different priorities and different lives and therefore, we may not have the same definition of what we mean by balancing life. However, everyone may agree that we need to have a balanced life in order to live our life meaningfully. Some people may talk about balancing life is sharing equal amount of time between life and work. For me, it is more important to have quality time rather than just having a number of hours with family or at work. In fact, I want to have enjoyment and daily achievement when I spend time with family or at work.

Life will deliver the values and balance we desire only when we achieve and enjoy something every single day especially in all the important areas that make up our lives. Meaningful daily achievement and enjoyment in each of the four life quadrants; friends, self, family, work will make us feel balance in life. What are our values in life? What are important to us? What makes us happy? What are the barriers?

There are 3 main areas in life to balance such as work, relationship and self-care. It is not very easy to do so but achievable. It is all in our mindset. It is all in what we think & say to ourselves. If we continue to think as we have always thought, we will continue to act as we always acted. If we continue to act as we have always acted, we will continue to get what we always gotten.

Work is not about the place where we go but what we do. It may be our career or house work, or even chores. Actually there is no cookie cutter solution. Each person has his/ her own formula defining the composition of career, family, friends and self into their integrated whole.

When people's lives are out of balance, they are unable to identify the obvious options for themselves and their families. We should have our own dream. We are no good to anyone if we ourselves are indisposed. We should be selfish ourselves first. We should maximize our productivity at work and should not let unfinished business carry over into our personal time.

We should always put in our best effort even if it they not our core competence, in other words, we should focus on whatever you are doing. We should organize. Disorganization is the theft of time. We must try to manage our day, instead of having the day manage us. We should make list of things to do and prioritize. We should never procrastinate, be flexible. We should know our weaknesses and strengths and be forgiving, especially to yourself. Finally, it is important to set boundaries and learn to say no.

When we talk about relationship, it is about personal, friendship, partners, spouse, children, etc. We should have a good teamwork. We should choose the right team members, better than us. We should invest time in the process. We must know our team members, colleagues & supervisors especially their strengths and weakness. It is important to leverage their strengths, and provide support in their areas of weakness. We must monitor (not manage) initial engagements, just like a life guard monitors new swimmers. It is very important to trust them and delegate them to make ourselves dispensable, so that we can play a larger role in strategic initiatives and career development of team members.

Self Care is how we take care of ourselves in spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, health, wellness, and exercises. We should take time for ourselves to do all these things. We must take more frequent though short breaks. We must establish good, supportive relationships both family and work and only worry to the point it helps.

Michael Althsuler once said that the bad news is time flies but the good thing is you're the pilot. After all, we must be able to live meaningfully and have a quality life. We will always have to take care of work, relationship and self. When we achieve and enjoy something every single day in all the important areas of our lives, we will feel balance and enjoy our live happily and meaningfully.
